Project Description
Oceanside Library
Long Island, NY | In Construction
The Library’s mantra is innovative service offered with a “can-do” spirit, a vision met with cutting-edge services, round-the-clock innovative programming, and spaces designed for optimal user experiences. In response to this call, the design team created a welcoming flexible state-of-the-art community hub and platform for creativity. In the new structure, MDA reimagined their library with a 50,000-square-foot library that is 50% larger than the former one. The impact of sustainability, biophilia, and universal design goals are visible throughout the library and landscaped program areas on the site.
Innovation is everywhere. The all-new Program Zone on the Lower Level offers unique spaces to serve the wide spectrum of program offerings with a full theater, a “Discovery” Kitchen/Activity Zone, a Podcast Suite, a STEM workshop, a Maker Space, meetings rooms, classrooms, and a gallery. Users are welcomed to the Main Level’s open café, user-experience-focused Welcome and Reference desks, light-filled varied seating areas, glazed quiet study rooms, garden-facing sunroom with a fireplace, easily browsed collection, Library of Things, Tech Hub, automated book return, 24/7 reservation access lockers, and more. Bathed in natural light, the Upper Level offers a youth-oriented collection, programming, and service spaces for Children, Tweens, and Teens, complete with an Imagination Station, Story Hour area, Teen Beacon, and Lightbox Lounge – each with varied resources and choices in seating set in a vibrant array of finishes and color. Activities connect to the site with a reading garden, outdoor plaza, vegetable garden, and welcoming “front porch”.
Technology maximizes functionality and versatility, including state-of-the-art presentation along with recording equipment. The library will host a room reservation system, with easy access to Wi-Fi and power at every seat. Sustainability goals were met with highly efficient HVAC and electrical systems, ultra-thermal fenestration, a robust building envelope, with low VOC/high recycled content materials and finishes specified throughout. The inviting entry, projecting window seating bays, with open views into activity areas connect the library to the community, beckoning all to come and join in on all they have to offer.
